The Seven Chakras Meditation

Discovering the Chakras: A Beginner’s Journey to Inner Balance
Chakras, the energy centers within our bodies, play a vital role in our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. While many people have heard of chakras, understanding what they are and how to work with them can be a transformative experience. The practice of chakra meditation, especially when combined with chanting (or listening) at specific frequencies, has gained popularity for its ability to balance energy and promote healing. Chakras are connected to Vedic traditions, like Vedic meditation, and in addition to my Vedic meditation practice, I will also listen to this video when I am feeling blocked or overwhelmed.

In this article, I’ll walk you through the basics of the seven chakras, their associated colors, elements, and sounds so you have a basic understanding. I'll also share some insights on how listening to chanting at different frequencies can support your journey toward inner balance. Although I’m not an expert in the chakras, my experiences with the above guided meditation have led me to want to share what I know. I highly recommend checking out the video for a simple, 20-minute practice to help open and balance your chakras. Just close your eyes, listen and be transformed from feeling stressed to finding a foundational state of calm.

What Are Chakras?
Chakras are energy centers that exist along the spine, from the base to the crown of the head. The word "chakra" comes from the Sanskrit word for "wheel," representing the spinning energy vortexes within us. These centers are thought to govern specific aspects of our physical and emotional health, and when they become blocked or imbalanced, it can affect our well-being in various ways.

Each chakra corresponds to a different part of our life, with its own unique color, element, and frequency. By meditating on these centers—whether through visualization, sound, or focused intention—we can work toward bringing balance to each area.

The Seven Chakras
Here’s an overview of each of the seven chakras, including their colors, elements, and associated sounds. I listened to the video above multiple times before knowing what I share here, and I still had a profound experience. Therefore, don't feel like you have to memorize everything below about the seven chakras. Simple awareness and your openness to trying this out is all that is needed.

  1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)

    • Location: Base of the spine

    • Color: Red

    • Element: Earth

    • Sound: "LAM"

    • The root chakra is all about grounding, security, and survival. When this chakra is balanced, we feel rooted, stable, and supported by the earth beneath us. It’s essential for our sense of safety and stability in the world.

  2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

    • Location: Just below the navel

    • Color: Orange

    • Element: Water

    • Sound: "VAM"

    • The sacral chakra is connected to our emotions, creativity, and sexuality. A balanced sacral chakra promotes healthy relationships and a strong creative flow. It’s all about fluidity and emotional expression.

  3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

    • Location: Upper abdomen

    • Color: Yellow

    • Element: Fire

    • Sound: "RAM"

    • The solar plexus chakra governs our personal power, self-esteem, and confidence. When open and balanced, this chakra fuels our ability to assert ourselves, make decisions, and trust our inner strength.

  4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)

    • Location: Center of the chest

    • Color: Green

    • Element: Air

    • Sound: "YAM"

    • The heart chakra is the center of love, compassion, and emotional healing. A balanced heart chakra allows us to give and receive love freely and deeply, creating a sense of connection and harmony with others.

  5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

    • Location: Throat

    • Color: Blue

    • Element: Ether

    • Sound: "HAM"

    • The throat chakra is tied to communication and self-expression. When open, it allows us to speak our truth, listen attentively, and express ourselves authentically.

  6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

    • Location: Forehead, between the eyes

    • Color: Indigo

    • Element: Light

    • Sound: "OM"

    • The third eye chakra is associated with intuition, perception, and inner wisdom. It allows us to see beyond the physical and tap into higher states of awareness. A balanced third eye enhances our ability to trust our instincts and gain clarity.

  7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

    • Location: Top of the head

    • Color: Violet or White

    • Element: Thought

    • Sound: "AAH" or Silent "OM"

    • The crown chakra represents spiritual connection and enlightenment. It connects us to the divine or universal consciousness. When this chakra is balanced, we feel a deep sense of peace and connection to the greater whole of existence.

How Chanting and Frequencies Open the Chakras
Sitting or lying down with your eyes closed and listening to a video that features chanting at specific frequencies can have a profound impact on your chakra energy. Each of the sounds or mantras mentioned above (e.g., “LAM” for the root chakra or “OM” for the third eye) resonates at a specific frequency that aligns with the vibrational energy of that chakra.

When you chant or listen to these sounds, the vibrations travel through your body, helping to clear blockages and restore balance to each chakra. Many people find that the rhythmic nature of the chanting, combined with the meditative state it induces, makes it easier to focus on the chakra’s qualities and allow its energy to flow freely.

These sounds can also help you relax, let go of stress, and create an opening for emotional and spiritual healing. As you focus on each chakra, you might experience shifts in your physical body, such as warmth, tingling, or a sense of lightness. It’s important to approach this practice with an open mind, letting go of expectations and simply allowing the process to unfold.

Why It Works: The Science of Sound Healing
Sound healing, or using frequencies to promote balance, has long been practiced in various cultures. Chanting and listening to sounds at specific frequencies can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging deep relaxation and emotional release. According to studies on brainwave entrainment, these frequencies can help synchronize brainwaves, facilitating a calm, meditative state.

Additionally, the vibrations from sound can help clear stagnant energy and support the body’s natural healing process. This is why chanting mantras or listening to sound meditations can have such a powerful effect on our emotional, mental, and physical states.

A Simple 20-Minute Chakra Meditation
For a simple yet effective practice, I highly recommend the video I’ve linked above. This 20-minute meditation uses chanting to activate and balance each of the seven chakras. It’s a great way to experience the benefits of chakra meditation, especially if you’re new to the practice. By focusing on the sounds and allowing the energy to flow through you, you’ll be supporting your body’s natural ability to heal and align.

I encourage you to explore this practice regularly and see how it feels for you. Whether you're looking to relieve stress, enhance creativity, or simply find a greater sense of peace, chakra meditation can be a powerful tool on your wellness journey.

When listening to a meditation that chants for the seven chakras, you're engaging in a practice aimed at balancing and opening each of your energy centers. Here's how it works and what you can do during the meditation:

  1. Focus on each chakra: Each chakra corresponds to a different part of your body and a specific aspect of your life (e.g., security, creativity, self-esteem, etc.). As you listen to the chanting, allow your attention to move to each chakra starting from the root at the base of your spine to the crown at the top of your head. The chants usually align with the frequency or vibration associated with each chakra.

  2. Visualize the energy: During the chanting, visualize each chakra as a spinning wheel of energy, often represented by a color. Imagine this energy clearing, growing brighter, and becoming more balanced with each chant. For example, the root chakra is associated with the color red and is linked to stability and grounding, while the heart chakra is green and represents love and compassion.

  3. Breathe deeply: As you listen, use deep, mindful breathing to support the flow of energy. Inhaling deeply brings in fresh energy, while exhaling allows any blockages or tension to release. The rhythmic chanting can help to anchor you, making it easier to stay present and focused.

  4. Feel the vibrations: Chanting is known for creating specific vibrations, each tailored to a particular chakra. The idea is that these vibrations can help to activate and balance the energy within each chakra. Some practitioners believe that by listening to or chanting these sounds (mantras like "LAM" for the root chakra or "OM" for the crown chakra), you can align your own energetic frequencies with those of the chakras.

  5. Observe and be present: Allow yourself to simply observe what comes up for you during the practice—any thoughts, feelings, or physical sensations. The experience might bring up emotions or memories tied to the themes of each chakra, such as safety (root), creativity (sacral), or expression (throat). This can be an opportunity to let go of any blocked energy in those areas.
